Hello.

I’m Rodger, a writer/storyteller based in British Columbia, Canada. I'm passionate about the craft of writing, about people and our myriad experiences and perspectives on life. I’ve been teaching creative writing professionally for twenty-four years in the classroom at the Vancouver Film School, and all around the world, now I'd love to help you tell your stories in on-line sessions, either one-to-one or in small groups, at times that are convenient to you.

See my full qualifications and please contact me if you want to talk.

Cheers!

Services

As writers we draw from life experience, and one should have something to say about that experience.

That’s where we begin.

Whether you’re coming up with a story you want to tell, have already started one and would like feedback on what you’re doing and trying to say, or you have finished a draft and require notes for a rewrite, I can help. I have over 25 years of experience as a writer, story editor, and instructor, and can work with you on one to one, or as a group, at times that work for you. You can book by the hour and pay as you go or we can arrange a program tailored to your needs. No pressure.

Getting Started

What is your story about and why do you want to tell it? What values are being explored? I can help ... with character development, establishing a clear theme, and with constructing a compelling plot that serves the character arc and your intentions. Genre conventions, dramatic structure, character types, turning points, conflict and climax are just some of the elements to be explored. Is it a short story, a stage play, a screenplay you want to write? I can help you get started.

Already Started

Have you already begun writing your story but have lost your way? I can help ... with assessing what you’ve done, what you want to do, and where you’re going. Sometime what we need as writers is a sounding board and relevant advice that helps us illuminate our intentions and find a new way to move the story forward with clarity, causality, and momentum. Over the years I have found that simply discussing our intentions can lead to break through moments that put everything into focus and revitalizes our enthusiasm for what we’re writing.

Ready for Rewrites

If you have finished your draft but you know it’s just the basis for the rewrite, you want to make it better. I can help. ... Does your draft fulfill the expectations you’ve established? Are the characters interesting? Does the plot serve the story? Rewriting is all about taking it to the next level, making it more engaging for the reader/audience. Every story has its own unique set of concerns, and identifying the problems is the only way to find solutions to them. I’m happy to help out.
